    fair hilltop?
Tá leanúnachas laistiar den logainm seo, ón fhianase is sine i leith, e.g. Cenondas (690c., Beatha Naomh Pádraig leis an Easpag Tíreachán atá caomhnaithe i Leabhar Ard Mhacha); Cenannas (bliain 743, Annála Uladh). Logainm aonfhoclach is ea é i bhformhór mór na bhfoirmeacha stairiúla atá le fáil go raidhsiúil ó dheireadh an 7ú haois i leith, seachas cúpla eisceacht ar nós Cenannas na Ríg (An Leabhar Laighneach, 1160c); Cenandas na Rig (Leabhar Bhaile an Mhóta, Leabhar Leacáin, 1391–7c), Ceanannas na Midhe (Foras Feasa ar Éirinn, 1633c), Cennadus na cCrois (lámhscríbhinn Ghaeilge, 1808c), Ceannadhnus an tSlóigh (Louth Archaeological Journal, 1840) mar aon le Ceannadas Mór na Midhe in Irisleabhar na Gaedhilge (1890). Is é an sampla deireanach an t-aon leagan den logainm a cuireadh i gcló roimh an 20ú haois a bhfuil an aidiacht mór ann. Bhí baint nár bheag ag Seosamh Laoide le hIrisleabhar na Gaedhilge — ceapadh ina eagarthóir é ar an Irisleabhar in 1899 — agus ba é a thug aitheantas don fhoirm fhada le mór ina ghasaitéar Post-Sheanchas ar foilsíodh an leagan Béarla-Gaeilge de i mbliain 1905, ‘Ceanannus mór na Midhe (locally Ceanadus mór na Midhe)’. Dá bharr sin, ní foláir, a rinneadh ordú rialtais sa 20ú haois ag athrú ainm an cheantair uirbigh go dtí Ceanannus Mór in ionad Kells. Bhí an leagan Ceanadas in úsáid sa Ghaeilge faoi thosach an 19ú haois ach go háirithe: an sampla is sine den leagan sin atá tugtha faoi deara againn ná, ‘Columb-kil’s House … Clugash Kanadus’ in Statistical Survey of the county of Meath a foilsíodh sa bhliain 1802.
Is í Ceanannas foirm oifigiúil Ghaeilge an logainm ó 1969 i leith.
Níor mhiste dhá ní eile a lua faoin logainm seo:
Thug duine de scríobhaithe Tháin Bó Cuailgne le fios sa lámhscríbhinn Leabhar na hUidhre timpeall na bliana 1100 gurbh ionann Cúl Sibrinni (nó Cúl Sibrille) na tána agus ‘Cennannas’. Dealraíonn sé go raibh an chéad logainm as feidhm faoin tráth úd.
Ba as foirm dhíshamhlaithe a bhí coitianta i dtéacsanna Laidine nó Béarla, .i. Kenles (srl.), a d’eascair an t-aistriúchán míchruinn Headfort Demesne atá fós mar ainm ar bhaile fearainn in aice bhaile Cheanannais
