Is fada ó bheith soiléir atá bunús an fhocail chéanna: The etymology of the word gráig still remains totally obscure - it does not appear to be either Welsh or Irish, and indeed does not make an appearance in Gaelic texts before the late sixteenth century ... its geographical distribution as a place-name element ... is closely linked to Anglo-French manorial settlement ... I would tentatively suggest that its primary meaning was that of a stock-farm or cattle-steading ... (Nicholls 1982 381)
