Explanatory note

  • English

    An Ribhéar ‘river-mouth estuary’

This bay is also known as Bá Neidíneach, ‘the bay of Neidín’. Neidín ‘little nest’ is the Irish name of the town known in English as Kenmare. That English name is an anglicisation of Ceann Mara ‘head(land) of the sea’, which originally referred to a different location.

Historical references

1598
the riuer of Canmarra
It should be noted that here and elsewhere in the survey the description ‘river of Canmara’ applies only to the inner estuary, while the ‘bay of Dunkerran’ describes the outer estuary, the point of division being approximately the islands today called Rossmore and Ormond (cf. the general Kerry map and the map of Glanerought barony. Today, the term ‘Kenmare River’ applies to the whole estuary, the description ‘bay of Dunkerran’ has become obsolete and the distinction here noted no longer exists. The former restricted use of ‘Canmarra ’ (ceann mara, ‘head of the sea’) was etymologically more correct. Clancarthy Surv., n.
