Cnoc an Éubuidh
"Site of Knock Abbey in the southern part of Thomastown Townland (Baile Thomais) is called in Irish Cnoc an Éubuidh. This is the exact pronunciation. The people assign no signification for Éubuidh; there is a tradition that there was a burial in this place; no one now remembers to have seen a burial in it. The field which is pointed out as the place where the Churchyard was, is now under pasture; the people have (in their division) a Townland under the name Cnocan Éubuigh. Éubuidh must be an Anglicized [sic] pronunciation of Abbey, giving A the sound of E and them pronouncing the b Irishlike." --O'Keeffe & O'Conor, 07/02/1837 [NB an comhartha // os cionn an dá litir eu- sna foirmeacha seo go léir]
