Tá tagairt ag Laurence (Maoleachlainn) Ó Broin, Gaeilgeoir léannta ón bhFailligh Bheag, do ‘the great holly that formerly grew in its woods, from which it was called Cuileneach Mhor’ in Litreacha na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis II 265. Dhá fhocal coitianta is ea cuileanntrach agus cuileannach atá díorthaithe ó cuileann “holly”.
