Explanatory note

  • English

The Irish word príosún is a borrowing from Anglo-Norman prisun. It is the name of a number of Irish placenames and the meaning of the word in a topographical context refers to the landscape. Looking at the Ordnance Survey map of Co. Tipperary, it is noticeable that ‘Prisoon’ is surrounded by hills or mountains. It probably means a place which is difficult to get out of.
