Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the construction?
Deimhníonn na samplaí stairiúla Gaeilge den logainm go dtugtaí An Obair ar an áit seo sa Ghaeilge: ‘Gaill na hOpri’ (na hAngla-Normannaigh atá i gceist) in Annála Connacht faoin mbliain 1270, cuir i gcás. Dúirt an file Pádraig Ó Briain i dtosach an 19ú haois go mb’fhearr leis a bheith ‘in Éirinn, ag an Obair’ ná a bheith ag troid in arm na Breataine (Amhráin na Midhe). Scríobh Éamonn de hÓir nóta faoin logainm san irisleabhar Dinnseanchas imleabhar I, 1965: ‘Chomh maith le brí theibí a bheith leis an bhfocal obair, bhí brí neamhtheibí freisin leis (rud a rinneadh, foirgneamh go háirithe). Is é is dóichí gurb í an bhrí atá leis an bhfocal anseo agus go dtagraíonn sé don mhóta atá siar ó thuaidh ón mbaile. Is é seo … an móta ar ar thóg Gilbert de Angelo caisleán (roimh 1201, is cosúil). Ní móta neamhchoitianta mór é. D’fhéadfadh sé, b’fhéidir, gurb é an focal abar (‘marsh’ etc.) atá i gceist anseo’.
Focal firinscneach is ea abar áfach agus tá an fhianaise stairiúil go léir ag cur leis an tusicint gurb é An Obair an leagan ceart
