Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Tá an chuma ann ón fhianaise gur fhorbair Carraig Ó mBroin go Carraig Bhrain laistigh de ré na Gaeilge féin, agus is uaidh sin a d'eascair an seanchas faoi Bran, mhadra Fhinn.

[Carrickbyrne] "Mr Devereux of Carigmenan has just informed me that 'Carigburne' which had formed part of the property of his family for some centuries is a misnomer, and should be 'Carigbran' from the 'Clogh na Can' or 'Clogh na Bran' (i.e.) the stone sunk perpendicularly into the earth and called the stone of the Dog, or the stone of Bran, Fan ma Couill's famous greyhound, to which stone Fan ma Couill (whose bed is shewn [...] the top of the Rock of Carigburne) used to tie his greyhound Bran and the stone will be found in the townland of Rahivaron joining to the townland of [.]cullaboyne."
