Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the cross of Ó Duibh?

Cnoc oireachtais Uí Mhóra, más fíor (féach FitzPatrick, Royal Inauguration in Gaelic Ireland 215–216), agus marc teorann seandúichí (idir ‘Feranoprior’ < Fearann an Phrióra, ‘F[e]rano[l]avler’ < Fearann Ó Leathlobhair agus iardheisceart ‘Tovmologan’ < Tuath Mhaolagáin ar léarscáil 1563c).

Tagann dornán foirmeacha stairiúla anuas chugainn, a bhfuil na tagairtí is soiléire trédhearcaí díobh le fáil in ‘A Treatice of Ireland’ (1599) sa chur síos ar ghluaiseacht na Sasanach roimh Chath Bhearna na gCleití (#27896): ‘a very highe hill called Croshy Duff, the general Ratehill of the province of Leinster’ agus arís ‘Croshi duff’. Féach leis 1962 ‘Croshy Duff … the name of this historic hill is now forgotten outside a few miles’ (Mac Cába, Historical Notes on Laois 76), a thugann le fios, b’fhéidir, gur mhair an t-ainm sa chruth sin go háitiúil freisin.

Tá sampla eile againn sa chontae seo de cro(i)s “cross” ar chnoc mór coigríche, mar atá bf An Chrois Ard (#28206) idir barúntacht Shliabh Mairge agus barúntacht Bhaile Adaim, 12km slí soir ó dheas uaidh seo.

D’fhéadfadh sé gur dubh “black” atá sa cháilitheoir. Ach féach go bhfuil an fhianaise go láidir ar son ghuta i ndiaidh an aicmitheora. B’fhéidir mar sin gur Crois Uí Dhuibh “the cross of Ó Duibh (sloinne)” atá ann, go háirithe ó luaitear an sloinne sin leis an gceantar seo sa dinnseanchas déanach (féach 1400c ‘Ó Duibh for Cheinél cCriomhthuinn’ ag Ó hUidhrín faoi bf Carraig na Páirce Dún Másc (#28296)). Cf. an sloinne sa mhionainm Duff’s Cross ar chrosaire ag bun an chnoic seo sa bhaile fearainn teorantach bf Cill Cholmáin Bháin lastoir, Historical Notes on Laois 73.

Cf. logainmneacha dar céad eilimint cros, crosa in Foclóir Stairiúil Áitainmneacha Gaeilge. Féach leis an tagairt spéisiúil 1608 ‘a cross-cut in the earth, called Crosseretagh’ CPR 113a ~ Site of R.C. Chapel SO 6ʺ os cionn bf Loch an Cheo (#28493) in airde. Cf. leis bf Baile Uí Dhuibh (#28512).
