Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the borough, burgage land

Tá tobar beannaithe agus fothracha teampaill i ndeisceart na Buiríse Móire (www.archaeology.ie). Cf. ainm an bhaile fearainn teorantaigh Ráth na Manach (#28330).

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Bhí an paróiste seo suite sa seandúiche Fearann Ó nDúllaing “the land of the Uí Dhúllaing” (1549 ‘ffarrynonowlyn’ = 1551 ‘Feryn Onowlyn’, 1551 ‘Farryn O’Nolan’, 1563c ‘Feranodovlin’, srl.). Fianaise ar urú atá sa mhalartú seo -n- le -d-. Tá fianaise againn ar an urú in ainm dúiche eile ar chuid í de Laoighis .i. Fearann Ó gCeallaigh “the land of the Uí Cheallaigh” agus san ainm abhann abh Abhainn Ó gCeallaigh “the river of the Uí Cheallaigh” (féach faoi #129). Dá bharr sin b’fhéidir gurbh fhearr glacadh leis gurbh í an fhoirm iolra atá in 1550–51 ‘Farryn y liallor’, 1563c ‘F[e]rano[l]avler’ < Fearann Ó Leathlobhair “the land of the Uí Leathlobhair” i Laoighis chomh maith.

Tá daoine de mhuintir Dhúllaing luaite sa 16ú haois le bf An Ros (#28427), par. Chluain Eidhneach agus Chluain Caoin laistiar, paróiste eile sa seandúiche Fearann Ó nDúllaing.

Cf. an logainm b Buiríos Mór Osraí (#1416672).
