Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Is é Tobar na gClog “the well of the bells” an leagan dlíthiúil Gaeilge d’ainm an bhaile fearainn seo, mar a dhearbhaítear in An t-Ordú Logainmneacha (Contae Bhaile Átha Cliath) 2011. Is léir ón bhfianaise nach raibh an ceart ag Seán Ó Donnabháin, scoláire logainmneacha de chuid na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis, leis an gcéad mholadh a thug sé i dtaobh an logainm seo, ‘Tobar ... na g-cloch’. Tacaíonn cuid den fhianaise leis an dara moladh a thug sé, áfach, mar atá ‘Tobar ... na g-clog [Tobar na gClog]’. Díol spéise is ea gur cosúil gur thuig sé gur chuimsigh an leagan is sine den logainm ainm eaglasta atá scríofa aige mar ‘Mac Lough’. Léiriú eile é seo ar a ghéarchúisí is a bhí an Donnabhánach, mar go dtaispeánann taighde a rinneadh ó shin gur athmhíniú é Tobar na gClog ar logainm ó thréimhse ní ba luaithe, *Tobar Mhac Loga nó a leithéid. Is cosúil gur thagair *Tobar Mhac Loga do Mic Loga “clann mhac Log” a luaitear i measc ‘Macrad noeb hÉrenn’ “macra naomh na hÉireann” i dtéacs a scríobhadh breis agus míle bliain ó shin (Corpus Genealogiarum Sanctorum Hiberniae, lch 156, 709 51, sa litriú Meán-Ghaeilge Meic Locae). Gach seans, mar sin, gur foirm idirmheánach idir *Tobar Mhac Loga agus Tobar na gClog atá san fhoirm ‘Tobarmhaoilóig’ a fuarthas i lámhscríbhinn Gaeilge ó c.1700, seachas foirm earráideach.

The official, legal Irish version of the townland name Tobermaclugg was established in the Placenames (County Dublin) Order 2011 as Tobar na gClog “the well of the bells”. It is clear from the evidence for Tobermaclugg that the Ordnance Survey placename scholar John O’Donovan’s initial suggestion of derivation from ‘Tobar ... na g-cloch’ cannot be correct, but some historical forms do support his second suggestion, ‘Tobar ... na g-clog [Tobar na gClog]’. Interestingly, he also seems to have been aware that the earliest form of the placename may have contained a name of ecclesiastical origin, which he writes as ‘Mac Lough’. This once again demonstrates the remarkable perceptive skill of O’Donovan, as subsequent research has shown that it is doubtless the case that Tobar na gClog is a reinterpretion of an earlier placename such as *Tobar Mhac Loga which apparently contains a reference to Mic Loga “the sons of Log”, who were named among the ‘Macrad noeb hÉrenn’ “offspring of the saints of Ireland” in a text compiled over 1000 years ago (Corpus Genealogiarum Sanctorum Hiberniae, p. 156, 709 51, under the Middle Irish spelling Meic Locae). Therefore, the apparently corrupt name-form ‘Tobarmhaoilóig’ found in an Irish manuscript c.1700, might in fact represent an intermediate form between *Tobar Mhac Loga and Tobar na gClog.
