Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Ainmnithe as an gcóilíneacht Shasanach i ndeisceart na Spáinne. Bhí ról lárnach ag an gcóilíneacht i gCath Trafalgair sa bhliain 1805, agus is dócha go bhfuair an áit seo an t-ainm go gairid ina dhiaidh sin. (Bhí an leithinis i mbéal phobal Shasana idir 1779 agus 1783 freisin nuair a bhí sí faoi léigear ag an bhFrainc agus ag an Spáinn — cf. 1780 'Garranoutragh otherwise Gibraltar' faoi bf Gibraltar (#40475) i Muineachán — ach tabhair faoi deara an tagairt an-luath 1749 'Parcel of lands of Rathbrand commonly called Gibralter' faoi bf Gibraltar (#55016) i gCill Mhantáin (Dr. Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich).) Tá bailte fearainn den ainm Béarla céanna i gContae na Mí.

  • English

Named after the English colony in southern Spain. The colony played a central role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and this place seems to have received the name soon afterwards. (The name would also have been popularly known in England while it was under siege by France and Spain between 1779 and 1783 — cf. 1780 'Garranoutragh otherwise Gibraltar' under bf Gibraltar (#40475) in Monaghan— but note the very early attestation 1749 'Parcel of lands of Rathbrand commonly called Gibralter' under bf Gibraltar (#55016) in Wicklow (Dr. Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich).) There is another townland of the same name in Co. Meath.
