  • English

stone ring-fort of the fire for singeing corn, or the separating of grain from the stalk by burning

Cathair “stone ring-fort” most likely refers to the enclosure recorded in this townland (see archaelogy.ie). Loistreán is a variant of loiscreán “fire for singeing corn” (FGB s.v. loiscréan), but it also referred to the ‘custom of separating the grain from the stalk by burning (Irish loiscreán) [which] was remarked on by Fynes Moryson in his Description of Ireland, and forbidden by statute in 1634’ (Fergus Kelly, Early Irish Farming (p. 23)). It is also found as a specific element in Cnoc an Loiscreáin/Knockaluskeraun in Clare and Cnoc an Loiscreáin/Mountbell in Cork.
