Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    Baile an Sceilg

    ‘the town(land) of An Sceilg’

Tá roinnt mhaith leaganacha stairiúla den ainm cnuasaithe ag an mBrainse Logainmneacha, faoin iontráil seo agus faoin iontráil 'Sceilg Mhichíl' ar logainm.ie. Féach a raibh le rá ag ‘An Seabhac’ faoin ainm cuir i gcás ‘”Baile an Sceillig” adeir gach n-aon ach uair fánach chloisfá “‘Baile na Sceallag”’ ó dhuine eolasach’. Go deimhin níl ach corrshampla de Baile na Scealg faighte againne i scríbhinn – ‘Baile na Sgealg’ i mBailiúchan na Scol (1938; féach Dúchas.ie) cuir i gcás. Foirm ud ‘na Scealg’, is amhlaidh atá sé ag tagairt don dá charraig, Sceilg Mhichíl agus An Sceilg Bheag. Tá na tagairtí do Baile an Sceilg i bhfad níos líonmhaire ná Baile na Scealg: ‘a mBaile an Sgeilig’ i litir Ghaeilge a scríobh Iarla Dheasumhan dar data 1579 cuir i gcás, Baile ‘n Sgeilg i Leabhar Sheáin Uí Chonaill srl. Tá tagairtí do Sceilg Mhichíl ar marthain ó ré na Sean-Ghaeilge a thaispeánann go raibh an focal sceilg firinscneach ó bhunús: ‘Eitgal Sceiligg’ Annála Uladh bliain 824 cuir i gcás (.i. ginideach uathu), ‘in Scelic’ i bhFéilire Thamhlachta, c. 800 /830 (ginideach uathu, ‘an Sceilg’ a scríobhfaí sa Nua-Ghaeilge) srl. An-seans gur foirm reoite í Baile an Sceilg, mar féach go bhfuil na hainmneacha seo sa cheantar chomh maith a thaispeánn gur focal baininscneach é sceilg sa chaint, An Sceilg Bheag, Bior na Sceilge; Ina theannta sin, Cliathán na Sceilge a thug an t-údar Micheál Ua Ciarmhaic ó Uíbh Ráthach ar leabhar leis.
