A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland – Lewis Ballybunnian, or Ballybunyan: The bay is about 500 paces in breadth, and from it to Kilconly Point stretches a fine range of cliffs…on the summit of one of the loftiest are vestiges of the old castle of Ballybunnian…One of the caverns is about 60 feet high in the interior; and there are several beautiful waterfalls from the summit of the cliffs, on one of which are the remains of Doon castle. Ballybunnian House, the property of the Gun family, is occasionally fitted up as a hotel…

OS Letters 1841 258. In Ballybunnion Townland in this Parish are ruins of a Castle, situated on a point of land over the White Strand of Ballybunnion… It is stated in the Annals of the Four Masters at AD 1582, which year has been referred to above at Listowel, that Mac Mac Maurice “destroyed Leacsnamha, Lios-Tuathail, Biaille and Baile an Bhuindeanaigh.” The last is Ballybunnion of which we speak, and signifies the Town of Bunnion, a man’s name.
