Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the small rocky land?
screallach — foirm de greallach? Cf. 1601 'the Gurliagh'. Féach leis screallach, 'barren land, stript bog' ag Ó Duinnín; scriollach = scileach, 'flaked rock' ag Ó Dónaill.
Féach leis "screallach = talamh árd clochamhail lom", Triocha-Céad Chorca Dhuibhne, 284. Is cosúil go dtagraíonn an t-ainm don phaiste carraigeach i dtuaisceart an bhaile fearainn seo (féach léarscáil ag www.epa.ie). - English
the small rocky land?
screallach — another form of greallach, 'muddy place'? Cf. 1601 'the Gurliagh'. See also screallach, 'barren land, stript bog' in Dinneen's dictionary; scriollach = scileach, 'flaked rock' in Ó Dónaill's Foclóir Gaeilge Béarla.
See also "screallach = talamh árd clochamhail lom [‘stony, bare high ground’]", Triocha-Céad Chorca Dhuibhne, 284. The name appears to refer to the rocky area in the north of the townland (see map at www.epa.ie).
