"...the name (Kilcowan) is of ecclesiastical origin and means the church of St Cowan - Cill Chuáin ... About 100 yards to the south west of the church there is a holy well called after St Cuá (Cooaun) the patron of the parish, at which a pattern was annually held on the 3rd of February until 30 years ago when it was abolished"
