Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Is aistriúchán í an fhoirm Ghaeilge.
Is minic a chastar leis an struchtúr ‘ainm pearsanta + ’s + town + sloinne’ i gcáipéisí luatha na Sean-Ghall sa chuid seo den Pháil. Sin é atá san fhoirm den logainm seo atá le feiscint iontráil na bliana 1310 (‘Philip son of Thomas le Lang of Molaghcassyr […] charged that he […] stole from Henry de Kermerdyn at Milesestounkermerdyn seventy one pigs and drove them to the said felons…’ comhthéacs na tagairte, CJR III 164). An logainm Caerfyrddin (Carmarthen) sa Bhreatain Bheag is bunús leis an sloinne seo de Kermerdyn ar ndóigh. Is cosúil gurb é Miles atá i gceist ‘Milo de Kermerdyne’, a bhí ainmnithe ina fhinné in éineacht le ‘Ralph de Carmerdyne’, ar chairt a bhaint le gníomhas talún i ‘Kyllussill’ dar dáta 27 Eanáir 1271 (Gormanstown Register 160).
Tháinig dhá fhorbairt ar an logainm ina dhiaidh sin. Is cosúil gur athraigh sé ó 1310 ‘Milesestoun-’ */ˈmiˑləzəstun/ go 1537 ‘Meiletiston’, 1562 ‘Moylotyston’ /ˈməɪlətəstun/ de bharr athmhíniú Miles > Milot (Mylott), foirm dhíspeagtha a bhí coitianta sa Pháil, ach is mór an trua é nach bhfuil aon tagairtí eile againn a chaithfeadh tuilleadh solais ar an bpróiseas. Rinne 1752 ‘Mylerstown’ /ˈməɪlərztun/ de ansin, mar a bheadh an t-ainm Myler ann, faoi mar a tharla i gcás samplaí eile de Mylott freisin, m.sh. 1542 ‘Milodestown’, 1637 ‘Ballinvilody’ > 1952 ‘popularly now Moylerstown’ = bf Baile an Mhíolóidigh/Mayladstown (#48332) (TÁ 78) agus 1400 ‘the two vills of Milote’, 1684 ‘Mylodstowne’ > 1750 ‘Mylardstown’, 1838 ‘Mylerstown’ = bf Clais an Rí nó Baile an Mhíolóidigh/Kingsmountain or Mylerstown (#27118) (CC 35).)
