Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of Ó Aileagáin
    Ó Aileagáin — sloinne

Cé nach dtagann aon tagairt d’fhoirm Ghaeilge an logainm seo anuas chugainn, measaimid gur ainm nó sloinne de bhunús Gaeilge a cháilíonn an t-aicmitheoir Brl. -town anseo.

Féach an t-ainm pearsanta Ail(l)eagáin (cf. bf Coill Aileagáin (#52614) i gContae Loch Garman agus an nóta ag Ó Crualaoich LnÉ IV 1109–10; féach idir MG Āilecān agus MG Āillecān in Corpus Genealogiarum Hiberniae) agus an sloinne Ó hAil(l)eagáin/Ó hAllagáin a d’eascair as sin. Ó hAllagáin an fhoirm atá á chur in iúl sa litriú leathghaelach seo a leanas i gcáipéis a scríobhadh i dtuaisceart Laoise ag tús an 16ú haois, ‘Thady y Alaguin’ (O Doyne MSS 145).
