Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

grove of (the) cattle-fold, summer pasture

Mheas Ó Donnabháin gur shampla é Dairyhill d’aistriúchán díreach ar logainm Gaeilge * Cnoc na Buaile (1838 ‘The Irish is Knocknaboley’). Bhí cuid den cheart aige, ach is cosúil ar an bhfianaise stairiúil gur garrán “grove” nó corrán “crescent” a bhí sa chéad eilimint anseo agus gurb amhlaidh gur leathaistriúchán atá san ainm Béarla.

Féach gur dearmad is cúis leis na hiontrálacha a thaispeánann -v- san ainm (1655, 1660c, 1669) agus ní réadú ar bh- séimh na Gaeilge atá ann: i ngach cás tá an botún ‘Knockanevane’ le haghaidh ‘Knockanebane’ (< An Cnocán Bán) le fáil san fhoinse céanna chomh maith.

Ní léir cén t-údar a bhí ag Ó Corragáin nuair a dúirt ‘The Irish of Dairy Hill is Doire a’ Chrocáin’ ach ní réitíonn an fhoirm Ghaeilge sin leis an bhfianaise. (Más foirm chruinn ón gcaint í bheadh fuaimniú an fhocail dheiridh in chr- in ionad chn- spéisiúil.)

The Irish of Dairy Hill is Doire a' Chrocain, that is, the Derry, or Oak Grove, of the Crocan (recte Cnocan) or Hill. Hence the townland should have been called not Dairy Hill but Derry Hill.
