Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the grove

An Garrán Rua “the red grove” an t-ainm atá le feiscint in 1601 ‘Garranroe’. Dhealródh sé go raibh an sloinne Ó Conaíle luaite leis an áit seo i ndeireadh an 17ú haois.

Díol spéise go raibh an bhéim ar an dara siolla sa 19ú haois (ar a dhéanaí); féach doiléiriú an chéad siolla i bhfoirmeacha ar nós 1838 ‘Gurrawn’ (cf. 1621 ‘Garrane’). Tá an bhéim sin níos láidre fós sa lá atá inniu ann, ionas nach bhfuil ach an t-aon siolla amháin san fhuaimniú áitiúil de ghnáth (2004, 2006).
