Glossary

tor, toraigh
English tall rock, steep rocky height; bush, clump

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

bush of (the) place of alder-trees?

Cuireann an fhoirm Ghaeilge 1838 ‘Tur feárnaidhei-fada /iː/ sa siolla deiridh in úil. Ní léir cé acu an é seo an bunfhoghrú (.i. fearnaí, gin. < fearnach “place abounding in alder”?) nó an faoi thionchar an litrithe Béarla in -y a tháinig sé chun solais. Cuir an logainm seo i gcomparáid le bf Tuaim na Fearna (#28203) agus i gcóimheas le bf Fearnaigh (#46468) i dTiobraid Árann agus le bar Fearnaigh (#198) [< fern+mag] i Muineachán.
