Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the ford of Uaithne?
Uaithne — ainm pearsantaTabhair faoi deara an fuaimniú áth /ɑːx/, mar atá le fáil ar fud an oirdheiscirt.
Tá bunús an cháilitheora éiginnte anseo. Bhí an t-ainm pearsanta Uaithne comónta i measc mhuintir Uí Mhóra ón 14ú haois ar aghaidh (féach Veach, Ossory, Laois & Leinster 5 208). D’fhéadfaí an t-ainmfhocal uaithne “prop; post” a chur san áireamh freisin (www.dil.ie s.v. 1 úaithne). Díol spéise go bhfuil sampla againn ó oirthear Laoise den aidiacht uaithne “green” (FGB s.v. uaine) á húsáid i dtaobh uisce: féach ‘A Ghearailt gheáirr an gháire ghonta … loch uaithne air uachdar do h-alla’ i rann mallachtach breactha in 1780 ag Gearóid Ó Broin ón bhFailligh Bheag (#28176) (i gcló in Hardiman’s Irish Minstrelsy 190).
Níl an focal cuain, gin. cuaine “litter; pack” le cur as an áireamh ach oiread.
