Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the castle of the púca
Níl sé fuirist púca (an neach osnádúrtha) a aithint ó Fúca (ainm pearsanta Gallda < Fulk/Fulco) ná fós ó An Púcach (sloinne < Pook, Fook srl.). Is í an fhoirm luath 1518–19 ‘Cloyth an puka’ (Kildare Rental 287) a thug orainn glacadh leis gurb é an t-ainmfhocal púca atá sa cháilitheoir anseo. Tá rian láidir Gaeilge le sonrú ar na logainmneacha sa pharóiste seo san fhoinse céanna, m.sh. ‘Bally an Tyskiyn’, ‘Baly an Prior’, ‘Ynche na leakaghe’, ‘Bealatha Cuyllean’ agus mar sin de (loc. cit.). Cf. Ó Cearbhaill, ‘An Púca i Logainmneacha’ in Ainm II 102.
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
- Anseo atá fothracha sheanteampall an pharóiste seo Church (in ruins) SO, a phléitear faoi #1465, agus Dun of Clopook SO < Dún Chloch an Phúca “the fort of Cloch an Phúca” (cf. www.archaeology.ie).
- Gabhann cosán thar bráid an dúin lastuaidh soir isteach in bf Tulaig Ó mBuí, cosán ar a dtugtar 1654 ‘a pathway which leades throug [sic] Glanmakilloge’. Seo ainm an ghleanntáin taobh thuaidh den dún, ní foláir, ach tá an t-ainm doiléir (ní heol dúinn aon bhaint a bheith ag Mocheallóg leis an áit seo; truailliú ar ‘-naselloge’ < na saileog “of the willows”, b’fhéidir).
