Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the little (river-)fork?

Is dócha ar na teorainneacha casta thoir agus thuaidh ar an gcnoc go raibh srutháin ar gach taobh den bhaile fearainn tráth.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Ritheann an Crooked River SO trína dheisceart anoir; ní heol dúinn aon tagairt d’ainm Gaeilge na habhann seo.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Dhealródh sé gurb é An Eidhneach “the place of ivy” an t-ainm eile atá le feiscint i bhfianaise an 16ú haois (féach www.dil.ie s.v. eidnech). Tá samplaí eile againn den logainm seo, go minic mar ainm abhann (#104149, #116365, #116216).

Sa 17ú haois a thagann an dara logainm in G- chun solais: má tá na foirmeacha cruinn (ní hannamh a bhíonn an litir w- míléite) is ait go dtugann cuid díobh fuaim ar nós gabhailín le fios (1612, 1660c) (malairt díspeagtha de gabhal “fork”, b’fhéidir, seachas malairt foirme de góilín “inlet, creek”) agus go bhfuil na foirmeacha eile gar d’fhuaimniú an lae inniu (1659, 1812) /gəiˈliːn/. Maidir leis an litriú ‘Guyheene’ i gcló sa Census, féach an litriú ‘Fahybegg’ ibid. le haghaidh ‘Fallybegg’ (#28176); leg. ‘Guylleene’ (?).

Is dócha gur par Díseart Gailine (#1434) atá i gceist ag Tadhg Ó Neachtain le c. 1744 ‘Ngaidhilin Laoighis Ui Mhórdha / fo shlíabh na groitheadh seóideach’ (Leabharlann Náisiúnta G135).
