Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of Paol
Paol — sloinne (< Poell na nAngla-Normannach < ap Hywel na Breatnaise)

Cf. 1550–51 ‘Thomas Apoell, soldier’ a fuair tailte in oirthear na barúntachta (#28154, #28159, #28163); cf. freisin bf Baile Héil (#27121) < Howell i gCill Chainnigh, a thaispeánann gur gaelaíodh an t-ainm céanna gan ap (‘mac’) mar * Haol.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Bhíodh an baile fearainn seo roinnte ina dhá chuid, 107 acra thoir i bparóiste Dhíseart Aonghais agus 43 acra thiar i bparóiste an Fhosaidh nó Thigh Mochua. Tugann CPR 113 le fios gur leis an bPiogóideach an roinn thiar sa bhliain 1608, ar a dtugtar ‘Tirekiragh’ sa téacs (ní léir an truailliú é seo ar ‘Coolcreagh’ < bf Cúil Chríche (#28491) nó an fíorainm ar leith é < Tír Chaorach (?) “land of sheep”). Bhí an roinn thoir ag Brereton agus ritheadh an teorainn eatarthu ‘through the grove of Blacklone’ (< Breac-chluain (?) “speckled pasture”).

Sa roinn thiar a bhí an cnoc cn Sián Maí Glaise (#1419166) a luaitear i roinnt seanghníomhais (pointe triantánachta 455′ SO 6″).
