Glossary

English (oak-)wood, grove, thicket

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the transverse (oak-)wood

De réir dealraimh ba é an píosa talún seo a bhí i gceist le 1569 ‘Agholallor’ (ag Piggott, F 1386), 1609 ‘Agholalor ... parcel of the estate of the O’Moores, attainted’ (ag Wakeman, CPR 127b) < Achadh Uí Leathlobhair “the field of Ó Leathlobhair” (?).

Seo na teorainneacha de réir F 1386 (1569):

    • Agholallor extending eastward to the high road near a hill called Shyan moyglas [cn Sián Maí Glaise (#1419166), bf Baile Phaoil (#28252)],

    • the road dividing it from the land of Edward Bruton [recte ‘Brereton’] [= bóthar R426 idir seo agus bf An Muine Uachtarach (#28257) lastoir],

    • westward to the mountain called Crossidiche [= cn Crois Uí Dhuibh (#1419165), bf Diméin Lamberton (#28492)],

    • southward to the high road separating it from the land of John Pigotte [= bóthar R427, ionann is 1608 ‘highway or gutt called Askeballihomoltagh’ (cf. 1654 ‘Innisballyhallmolty’ CS X 22) ar feadh theorainn bharúntacht Chuileannaí laisteas < Easca Bhealaigh —, Inis Bhealaigh — (?). D’fhéadfadh sé gurb é an sloinne Ó Tomaltaigh atá sa cháilitheoir, sloinne a ndearnadh Hamilton de i Loch Garman (féach Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV (LG) s.n. Ballyhamilton). Cf. 1608 ‘Crossamalenten’ (CPR) lámh leis. Féach leis an sloinne Angla-Normannach seo a leanas sa cheantar seo: 1297 ‘Hugh de Yemlton, with his following, broke the house of Will. O’Fynaby, at the town of Benedict son of John … brought them to Newtown of Leis’ CJR I 180, ‘John Bron, of Lestiok … John de Yemlton … Hugh de Yemlton stole’ 181],

    • and northward to a ditch separating it from the land of John Pigotte [= bf Lamberton Demesne lastuaidh].’

Cf. CPR 127b (1609) ‘The parcel of land called Agholalor, containing 12a, extending E. to the highway near Shianee-moyglass hill, which road is the mearing between it and Edward Breereton’s lands, W. and is the known mearing between the said 12a and Crossidugh mountain, S. to the highway, which is the mearing between them and Robert Piggott’s lands, N. to a ditch between them; parcel of the estate of the O’Moores, attainted; value 3s.’

Díol spéise go bhfuil na tailte seo taobh istigh de theorainneacha thailte an Phiogóidigh mar a leagtar amach iad i 1608 (CPR 112). Cf. ‘Robert [Piggott] … by 1622 also held Aghalaker, granted to his father but passed in the interim to John Wakeman’ (Cosby, Laois: History & Society 302).
