Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the wood of Liathán?
    Liathán — ainm pearsanta?

‘Talamh ard (coillteach); coill; ceann tíre’ an réimse bríonna atá leis an bhfocal ros. Is minic an bhrí ‘talamh ard (coillteach)’ leis sa taobh seo tíre ach ní foláir nó is coill atá i gceist in ainm an bhaile fearainn bhig leibhéalta seo.

Tá éiginnteacht ag baint leis an dara heilimint. Is léir go raibh an cáilitheoir déshiollach san ainm Gaeilge sa 16ú agus sa 17ú haois agus gur forbairt dhéanach is cúis le fuaimniú an lae inniu 2005 /rɑsˈliːən/. Dá bharr sin is féidir an t-ainm pearsanta Lián (< * Líoghán < SGh. Lígán, atá le fáil i measc na nOsraíoch in Corpus Genealogiarum Hiberniae 130a28, 130a45) a chur as an áireamh.

Is dócha gur cheart 1563 ‘Rosselekyns’ a léamh mar ‘Rosselehyns’ agus 1659 ‘Rosslegan, Rosslegar’ mar ‘Rosslehan’. D’fhéadfaí leanúnachas a rianú ansin mar seo a leanas: 16ú haois ‘Rossele[h]yn’, ‘Rosseleaghan’ * [ro̤sˈl′iəːhɑːn′] > 17ú haois ‘Rosleachan’ > 18ú haois ‘Rosleaghane’ * [rɑsˈliːhɑˑn] > 19ú haois ‘Rossliaghan’ * [rɑsˈliːhən] > 2005 [rɑsˈliən]. Tá cosúlachtaí idir na foirmeacha stairiúla seo agus an fhianaise do bf Tamhnaigh Liatháin (#34879) i Maigh Eo: 1661 ‘Tawinleaghan’ > 1838 ‘Tawnyloghane’ > 1966 /ˌtoːniˈliɑˑn/.

Níor mhiste tagairt a dhéanamh don litriú béarlaithe 1564 ‘Owen O’Leghan’ (F 637) (duine ó Bhaile Briotáis (#28286) in oirthuaisceart an chontae a bhí i gceist). Is féidir a mheas gur réadú ar an sloinne Ó Liatháin atá sa litriú seo ‘O’Leghan’. Tá an sloinne Lyons le fáil in Griff. Val. (37 duine), a bhformhór sin i mbarúntachtaí an tSráidbhaile (11) agus Phort Laoise Thoir (11) in oirthear an chontae.

Féach, áfach, go bhfuil patrún béime difriúil ar an gcáilitheoir in bf Baile Uí Liatháin (#28837) i gCill Abáin in oirthear an chontae .i. 2006 /baliˑleˈhaːn/ — is deacair é seo a mhíniú go sásúil.
