Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the break?

Suite ar theorainn trí bharúntachta ar Shliabh Bladhma. Tá mám sna sléibhte i dtuaisceart an bhaile fearainn. Cf. leis bf Baile an Bhriste () (#47131).

Is deacair an litriú in 1814 ‘Breshoo’ (CGn.) agus in 1838 ‘Brishoo’ (Despard:AL = tiarna talún sa cheantar) a mhíniú. An fhoirm cheanann chéanna ‘Brishoo’ a scríobh na sapair san Ainmleabhar (BS:AL) ach féach nach réitíonn sé sin leis an bhfoirm fhoghrúil 1838 ‘Brishă’ a breacadh síos ó mhuintir na háite cúpla mí ina dhiaidh sin (pl:AL) (cf. bf Cluain Dá Ghlas (#28358)).

Ní bheifí ag súil le /uː/ mar réadú ar -(e)adh na Gaeilge sa cheantar seo. Is é is dóichí ná go bhfuil na foirmeacha seo in -oo lochtach ar shlí éigin. B’fhéidir nach raibh in -oo an chéad lá ach u-gairid /u/, iarracht ar ghuta láir neamhaiceanta deiridh /ə/ a chur in úil.
