Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the speckled castle

Caisleán é seo a thóg Tadhg mac Amhlaidh Ó Duinn sa 15ú haois (cf. 1475c ‘Oradh do Thadhg mac Amalguigh [mac Laighnigh LS] mic Ruaidrigh hi Duinn … is lais do righneadh … in caislén breac … agus teampull in caislein breic’ RIA 23 P 61, i gcló in LS Uí Dhuinn 117n), ar láthair 1400c ‘the manor of Courthrad … lordship of Oregane’ COD III 45 (leg. Courtbrak? < An Chúirt Bhreac) dar le Nicholls (LS Uí Dhuinn 115). Tá cur síos san Fhardal Seandálaíochta ar an gcaisleán agus ar an teampall (www.archaeology.ie). Thuairimigh Ó Donnabháin gurbh ionann é agus 1547 ‘acc an mbádhún riaganach’ < An Bábhún Riagánach “the bawn, fortified enclosure of the Uí Riagáin” in ARÉ V 1502 ach féach freisin bf Tigh na hInse (#28682).

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:

    1. Baile an Chaisleáin Bhric “the town(land) of An Caisleán Breac” an logainm eile atá le feiscint i gcuid den fhianaise, m.sh. 1608/9 ‘BallyCaslanebrack alias Castlebrack’.

Díol spéise dhá leagan den mhionainm céanna. Féach 1550 ‘Boerballynycaislan’ < Bóthar Bhaile an Chaisleáin “the road of Baile an Chaisleáin”, ainm bóthair traslitrithe faoi mar a bheadh ina mhion-logainm ann féin; tabhair faoi deara gur cailleadh an -th- /-h-/ láir as an bhfocal Gaeilge bóthar agus é gan béim. Os a choinne sin tá 1550 ‘the said botyr of Ballynycaislan’ san fhoinse céanna, a aistríonn an chéad eilimint le botyr [leg. batyr?], focal coitianta i mBéarla na Sean-Ghall in Éirinn. Sid é bóthar arna glacadh mar iasacht go han-luath, tráth a mbíodh fuaim dhéadach chuimilteach /θ/ ag -th- sa Ghaeilge fós, go ndearna déadach pléascach /t̪/ de sa chás seo sa Bhéarla. Is é batter an fhoirm is comónta den fhocal céanna (e.g. 1607/8 ‘the great Batir that goeth to Mucluain’, LS Uí Dhuinn 41; cf. Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV (LG) s.n. Stonybatter (par. Carrick)).

Os comhair an chaisleáin amach in iarthar bf Ros Caoin (#28353) is ea a bhí na páirceanna seo a leanas suite:
    2. 1607/8 ‘Fiaghebegge, Fiaghemore’ < Fiach Beag, Fiach Mór (< fia + achadh) (?) “uncultivated field” (cf. bf Fia Rua (#30673) i Luimneach, bf Fia Mór (#48042) i dTiobraid Árann; cf. bf Fiach (#21278) sa Ghaillimh).
    3. 1607/8 ‘Crossinagha’ < Cros an Achaidh (?) “the cross(roads) of the field” (LS Uí Dhuinn 40).
    4. Déantar tagairt sna foinsí gallda don cheantar ina raibh an Caisleán Breac suite .i. 1540 ‘Twoswere’, 1540 ‘Toghesuier’, 1572 ‘territory called Twosmerye’, 1595 ‘in parochia de Tuaghe Smertha’ < Tuath Smeartha (?). Cf. an logainm stairiúil Gaeilge 1100c ‘Mag Smerthach la Hu FalgeLL 17b, 1400c ‘Mag Smearthā la h- failgeLec. 21r, 1500c ‘fúair a Túaith Ghéisil a ghuin, ’sa maitin ar Muigh Smerthuin’ *Eg. *1782 (cf. par. Ghéisille díreach lastuaidh den Chaisleán Breac), 1650c ‘Magh Smeathrach i n-Uibh FailgheFFÉ < Maigh Smearthach (?) (féach Onom. Goed. s.nn. mag smerthach, mag smerthuin; cf. www.dil.ie s.v. smerad, smerthain).
