Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Ní léir brí cois anseo.
D’úsáidtí an focal mar théarma ar thomhas talún ar uairibh (cf. bf An Chois (#30928) i Luimneach) ach is ar éigean gurb é sin atá i gceist anseo, amuigh sa phortach. Seans go dtagraíonn cois do chúrsa uisce anseo; cf. abh Abhainn na Coise (#1419729) i bPort Laoise Thoir. Cf. caise (bain.) “a stream, a brook” ag Ó Duinnín, b’fhéidir, agus Onom. Goed. s.n. casse (6). Is dócha go bhfuil 1561 ‘a bogg called Cosshemore’ neamhchruinn — féach gur Móin Eitigh (#1410800) ainm an phortaigh ina bhfuil ‘Cosshemore’ suite (cf. 1654 ‘through a bogg to Cosmore’ CS X 24).
Is féidir an t-ainm seo a chur i gcomparáid le cúpla logainm eile i Móin Alúine. Tá 1659 ‘a Brooke in the Red Bogg called Coshechilly’, ‘a Brooke commonly called Coshechilly’ CS VIII (CD) 160 < Cois an Choiligh (?) “the cois of the cock” le fáil i bparóiste Thigh Mochua agus 1659 ‘Owen Coshy’, ‘Owenecossy … Owenenecossy’ ibid. 162, 164 < Abhainn na Coise “the cois river” i bparóiste Bhaile na Faiche i gContae Chill Dara. Tá an dá pharóiste seo le hais a chéile ar imeall portaigh mhóir darb ainm An Mhóin Rua “the red bog” (1654 ‘A great Red Bog … called the bog of Munroe’ DS (bar. Chlaonadh)). Tamaillín siar uathu seo atá bf Cois Loinge “cois of (the) swallow-hole?” (#41691, #25548) (1550 ‘Coyssheloyne’, 1618 ‘Coshelyn’, srl.) ar theorainn Chontae Uíbh Fhailí le Contae Chill Dara, mar a bhfuil an abhainn Cushaling River SO. Díol spéise go raibh an mionainm 1607 ‘Coshbegge’, et var., le fáil faoi bf Ros Caoin (#28353) atá in aice 1655 ‘Red Bog’ ar theorainn thoir thuaidh na barúntachta. D’fhéadfadh cois a bheith ag tagairt do cruth na háite.
Tá an dá bhaile fearainn seo idir chamáin suite cois portaigh ar theorainn thuaidh Chontae Laoise an lae inniu. Féach an tagairt don dúiche Uí Riagáin in 1550 ‘Coyscedoyne [< Cois Uí Dhuinn (?)] alias Coysshemore … betwixt Offaly & O Regane’.
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Is é Glashagh Water SO (#1419820) < An Ghlaise < Glaisín na hEorna (?) “the (little) stream of the barley” ainm an tsrutháin anseo. Shníodh sé tríd an áit a bhfuil an tóchar ar a dtugtar 1655 ‘a Togher Moueherna’ DS, 1805 ‘Togher of Monaberne [sic]’ Cahill, 1841 Togher of Monahorn SO in bf Bróglach (#28371). Is réasúnta a mheas go bhfuil baint idir an dá ainm — Móin na hEorna “the bogland of the barley”, b’fhéidir.
