Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    rough land

Gné de chanúintí an oirdheisceart ab ea -bh/-mh leathan deiridh a bheith báite i ndiaidh consain leachtaigh, ar nós 1838 ‘garbh (rough) pronounced gara’ LSO I 1 (cf. Irish Dialects 77). Is dócha gur cailleadh -bh- tar éis -r- i lár an logainm seo — féach go háirithe an fuaimniú áitiúil 1838 ‘Gorrach’. I gcontaetha eile thiocfadh guta fada /uː/ mar chúiteamh ar an -bh- caillte, rud nár tharla anseo. Cf. bbf Garbhach (#28897) (#28855) i Sliabh Mairge.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:

    1. Lough Eleen SO < Loch an Lín (??) “the lake of the net”.
    2. Knockanrush SO < Cnoc an Rois (?) “hillock of An Ros” [cf. bf An Ros (#28680) os a chionn seo amach lastoir].
    3. Knockbawn SO < An Cnoc Bán “the white hill”.
    4. Ní heol dúinn aon tagairtí stairiúla do Kane’s Hill SO ná do Mac’s Hill SO.
