Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the palisade
pailís — iasacht ón bhfocal Angla-Normannach palis

Tá foirmeacha 1564c–1660c an-ghairid don bhfuaimniú Gaeilge (cf. nóta an Donnabhánaigh san Ainmleabhar in 1838). Rinneadh giorrú ar an dara siolla sa leagan béarlaithe den logainm am éigin idir dheireadh an 17ú haois agus tús an 19ú haois mar a tharla go forleathan, m.sh. id Pailís Ghréine (#123641) (Lm 24) mar a breacadh an litriú béarlaithe ‘Pallas’ san Ainmleabhar taobh le ‘sráid na Pailíse’ ag Gaeilgeoirí na háite.
