pasture of (the) bull
1563 ‘Gonterry’ atá sa bhundeontas (F 498) agus 1571 ‘Clonteren’ in F 1715 ‘Livery to Hugh m‘Callowaghe’ < Aodh mac an Chalbhaigh [Mac Dónaill]. Truailliú iad seo araon ar *Clonterry, mar is léir ó na tagairtí 1619 ‘Genterry al’ Clonterse’ [leg. ‘Clonterfe’] agus 1621 ‘Gentery alias Cloneterfe alias Clonterry’.
Díol spéise na foirmeacha nua úd de chuid an 17ú haois .i. 1621 ‘alias Cloneterfe’, 1619 ‘al’ Clonter[f]e’, mar is cosúil gur iarrachtaí iad ar an dara mír a shoiléiriú mar tairbh “of (the) bull”. Ní hamhlaidh go dtaispeánann siad malairt fuaimnithe mar níl a leithéid de litriú in -terfe le fáil ina ndiaidh. Bheifí ag súil le cailliúint -bh caol deiridh i ndiaidh r-leachtaigh sa chanúint (tairbh * /tˠɛrəβʹ/ > /tˠɛrɪ/) agus go deimhin sin é atá le tuiscint as na foirmeacha eile ar fad (1549 ‘-tare’, 1563 ‘-terrey’, srl.). Féach go bhfuil soiléiriú an-iontaofa le fáil in Inq. Lag. 15 Jac. I (1619) ar ainmneacha eile i ndeontas seo Mhic Dhónaill.
Gan an dá alias úd a chur san áireamh (1619, 1621) d’fhéadfaí a áiteamh gur Cluain tSearraigh “pasture of (the) foal” atá ann.
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
- Díreach taobh theas de Choill Chluain Tairbh i dtuaisceart an bhaile fearainn atá 1838 ‘Clonmilan’, 1841 Clonmoyland SO < Cluain Maoláin (?) “pasture of (the) hornless cow”. Tá bríonna éagsúla le maolán ach d’fhéadfadh sé go seasann sé i gcodarsnacht le tarbh in ainm an bhaile fearainn. Cf. freisin bf Coill Mhaoláin (#28730) “the wood of Maolán (ainm pearsanta)” i gClann Donncha.
