the tillage-plot of Amhlaidh
Amhlaidh (< Amalgaid) — ainm pearsantaSinsear seacht dtreabh Laoighse ba ea Amalgaid Réta. Féach ‘Ó Amalgaid Réta trá ro fodailte secht Laíchsi Lagen .i. ó Licc Réta’ Corpus Genealogiarum Hiberniae 127a42 (cf. D. Ó Murchadha in Laois: History and Society 43–44; cf. an nóta faoi bf, par An Caisleán Breac (#28344) in Uí Riagáin). D’fhéadfaí abhaill, gin. abhla “apple-tree” a chur san áireamh sa cháilitheoir freisin, b’fhéidir (cf. bf Doire Abhla (#42023) (UF 15, 16), bf An Abhaill (#52402)(LG 32).
Suíomh an bhaile seo ag bun cnoic, is dócha, a thug ar Thomás Ó Conchúir na Suirbhéireachta a thuairimiú gur buaile a bhí san ainm (1838 ‘ceap bhúaile’ [mar a bheadh logainm comhshuite * Ceapbhuaile “tree-stump boley”]). Tuairim gan bhunús í sin.
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
- I ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn tá an t-ardán beag Knocknashee SO < Cnoc na Sí “the hill of the fairy mound”.
- Bhailigh an Príseach mionainm eile anseo freisin, ‘Ard Bouk … a small hill which runs across two fields’ < Ardbhuaic (?) “the high peak”. (Tá an t-eolas seo i measc nótaí Liam Price atá i seilbh Bhrainse Logainmneacha.)
