Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

top of (the) brown animal?; the top of Donn?
    Donn — ainm pearsanta?

Tá bunús an logainm seo éiginnte.

Is léir gur mar Bord-owin a thuig an Donnabhánach na foirmeacha scríofa a bhí os a chomhair san Ainmleabhar (féach 1838 ‘Bord abhann’ aige). Ach is cosúil gur cheart an Bordowin seo a léamh mar Bor-d(o)win agus gur guta cúnta faoi ndear an -o- idir -d- agus -w-. Tá an baile fearainn seo suite ar thaobh sléibhe le hais bf An Barr Riabhach (#28354). Tá an fhoirm 1838 ‘Bordween’, a breacadh síos ón gcaint, ag teacht leis an bhfoirm scríofa is luaithe dá maireann, 1726 ‘Bardwin’, atá féin ar aon fhocal leis an bhfuaimniú áitiúil 2004 /bɑːrdwin/. Measaimid dá bharr sin gurb iad na foirmeacha seo is iontaofa.

Dhealródh sé gur réadú ar an bhfocal doinn atá sa dara heilimint anseo. Sa chuid is mó d’Osraí dhéantaí fadú ar i roimh -nn caol, m.sh. 1667 ‘Garrincreene’ faoi bf Garraí an Chrainn (#26912) (CC) (cf. tinn /tʹiːŋʹ/ LASID II, crainn /kriːŋʹ/ Éigse XXVI; cf. freisin 1540 'Drowyn' Ir. Mon. Poss. [< Droinn] faoi bf Cnoc Droinne (#41714) (UF 3, 4)). Thaobhaigh barúntacht Uíbh Eirc, in iardheisceart Chill Chainnigh, leis an gcóras défhoghraíochta a bhí i réim i bPort Láirge: féach 1838 ‘muin chadhain’ faoi bf Móin Choinn (#1411897) (CC) agus bf Sceach an Chrainn > Skehacrine (#49669) (PL) (cf. LASID I). Mar léiriú ar an difríocht seo cuir i gcás an dá fhuaimniú éagsúla a d’aimsigh an Corragánach ar ainm an chnoic Sliabh gCruinn i ndeisceart Chontae Chill Chainnigh: ‘Shleea(v)-gryng’ in Uíbh Eirc, ‘Shleea(v)-greeng’ sa chuid eile de dheisceart an chontae (History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory IV 177–8).

Féach bf An Barr Riabhach (#28354); cf. par Bordaíol/Bordwell (#1423) i gClann Donncha.
