Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the peak?
Níl an fhoirm seo cinnte.
Is cosúil, ar litriú an Chorragánaigh 1905 ‘Stuach’, gur -ch /x/ a bhí á chur in úil le -gh san Ainmleabhar agus gur stuach an fuaimniú áitiúil. Ní bheifí ag súil le stuach mar réadú ar stúag na Sean-Ghaeilge (> stua na Nua-Ghaeilge; e.g. sl Stua Laighean (#1166781) (Ce, LG)). Ach b’fhéidir gurbh ann d’aidiacht substainteach den déantús stua+-ach (“place of peaks?”) mar ainm ar thalamh i gceantar sléibhtiúil: cf. 1250 ‘Stouach’ faoi bf Ballinastoe (#55326) (CM 6, 7, 11) suite ag bun an tsléibhe sl Dioghais (#1167122). Díol spéise gur scríobh Ó Donnabháin ‘Stuadh’ (.i. stua) mar réiteach ar an ainm seo mar sin féin.
Measaimid go bhféadfadh sé gur foirmeacha truaillithe iad seo ar stuaic na Gaeilge; féach an fhoirm áitiúil 2004 /sduːk/. Tá bríonna éagsúla le stuaic (e.g. “pinnacle … projection … height … promontory or hill”, etc., Dinneen).
