Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of Muiris
Muiris — ainm pearsanta (< Moris na nAngla-Normannach)

Cf. Clann Muiris, géag de Chonchúraigh Ó Failí a bhí i réimeas in Oireadh (#1415), taobh theas den pharóiste seo. Féach Topographical Poems (c. 1400) (rann breise é seo a cuireadh leis an bpríomhdhán, ibid. 91n):

    Do ghabh críoch álainn amhra
    taoiseach oirdhearc atharrdha,
    Mac Muiris, nír dhoiligh dhi
    suidhis a n-oirear Oire.

Níor mhair an t-aistriúchán Béarla 1666 ‘[Ballymorrish alias] Maurishtowne’ ASE 84 i bhfad. Tá roinnt bréagaistriúcháin agus ainmneacha Béarla nuachumtha san fhoinse céanna, cuid acu níos cruinne agus níos buaine ná a chéile.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Carrick Wood SO, 1905 ‘a wooded hill called Corrig’ JKAS IV 197 < An Charraig “the rock”. Cnoc carraigeach coilltiúil in oirthear an bhaile fearainn (‘Karstified limestone bedrock at surface’ www.epa.ie; cf. Rockfield Cottage SO), mar a bhfuil an foirgneamh baoise darb ainm The Spire (1801 ‘erected … to give employment to the poor in the year of the great frost’ Stat. Surv. 136; cf. www.archaeology.ie).
