Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
(the) eminence
Cnoc (119m) é seo ar theorainn na mbarúntachtaí Port Laoise Thiar agus Thoir. Tá sé léirithe ar léarscáil 1563c mar a mbuaileann ‘Feranodovlin’ (Fearann Ó nDúllaing) le ‘F[e]rano[l]avler’ (Fearann Ó Leathlobhair) (cf. par An Bhuiríos (#1424)).
Pléann an Dr. Nollaig Ó Muraíle an logainm seo, agus cuid mhaith samplaí eile de Teamhair i logainmneacha na hÉireann, san alt leis in The Kingship and Landscape of Tara. Deir sé faoin logainm áirithe seo ‘The earliest forms are clear reflections of the name Teamhair, with evidence of a change from a diphthongal to a /uː/ sound between 1571 and 1628 such as is found in a number of other names’ (op. cit. 468).
