Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    approach to (the) ford of (the) mill;
    ford-mouth of (the) mill

    Taispeánann na foirmeacha 1606 ‘Beallabollin’, 1655 ‘Bealamullin’, etc., gur béal átha atá i dtosach an logainm seo seachas baile.

    Is dócha go bhfuil Droichead na Brocraí/Brockry Bridge (SO 6ʺ) suite ar láthair an átha seo a thug a ainm don bhaile fearainn. Ní mhaireann aon rian den mhuileann féin.

    B’fhéidir gur cheart 1606 ‘Beallabollin’ a léamh mar ‘Beallavollin’ < Béal Átha Mhuilinn — ba bheag idir -b- agus -v- i stíleanna áirithe peannaireachta sa tréimhse sin. Ní bheifí ag súil le séimhiú tar éis átha (gin.) go stairiúil, ach tá corrshampla de le fáil, e.g. bf Béal an Átha Mhóir ( 77, 78, 83) (#48346).
