Glossary

English way, pass
English hamlet; cattle-steading?

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the hamlet of the way

Ritheann bóthar suaithinseach tríd an mbaile fearainn seo (www.osi.ie) agus tá tagairt do ‘rectilinear enclosure’ san Fhardal Seandálaíochta (www.archaeology.ie).

Tá an fuaimniú áitiúil -aigh /ə/ le sonrú san fhianaise anseo, go háirithe sa litriú 1838 ‘Graag-a-valla’ taobh leis an bhfoirm Ghaeilge ‘Gráig a bheallaigh’ (cf. 2004 /greːgɑˈvalə/). Is í an tsaintréith seo de chanúintí an cheantair seo atá i gceist leis an Donnabhánach sa nóta ‘[Graigueavallagh] would be made Graigavally in Connaught and Ulster’.
