Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    (the) town of —

Ní léir brí an dara heilimint. Tá an fhoirm Ghaeilge seo bunaithe ar na tagairtí don logainm i nGaeilge as lámhscríbhinn leighis a scríobhadh in 1596, m.sh. ‘a mBaile Cuad’ agus ‘a mBaile Cuthad’ (féach Nic Dhonnchadha ‘The Medical School of Aghmacart’ in Ossory, Laois and Leinster 2 (2006) le haghaidh tuilleadh eolais faoin bhfoinse seo).

D’fhéadfadh sé gur comhad (gin. comhaid) “keeping; repository” atá ann. Cuir i gcás bf Comhad/Coad (Cl 17) (#5921) arbh é ‘cúmhad’ (AL), ‘coo-ud’ (LSO) an fuaimniú áitiúil in 1839. Bheifí ag súil leis an bhfoghraíocht chéanna sa cheantar seo (cf. nóta faoi bf Cluain Uamhnach, par. na Cille (#28750)) agus b’fhéidir gur iarrachtaí iad 1596 ‘Cuad’ agus ‘Cuthad’ araon ar an bhfuaim seo más ea. D’fhéadfaí an focal comhfhuaimneach comhfhad a chur san áireamh freisin.
