Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of Ó Cuilinn
    Ó Cuilinn — sloinne

Measaimid gur dócha gur saobhaistriúchán ar an logainm Gaeilge seo is bun leis an ainm Béarla Hollymount (faoi mar a thuigtí *Baile an Chuilinn “the town of the holly”). Tugann Census 1659 ‘Cullen’, ‘Cullin’ mar phríomhshloinnte Gael i mBaile Adaim, an bharúntacht teorantach leis seo lastuaidh.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Ní heol dúinn aon tagairtí stairiúla don mhionainm Ballyfiniska [Cross Roads] SO in iarthar an bhaile fearainn, ná ní áirithe cad dó a thagraíonn fionnuisce “white water” más sin atá sa cháilitheoir. Ritheann sruthán trí lár an bhaile fearainn go deimhin, soir isteach in bf Sruthail (#28887) (ainm a chiallaíonn féin “stream”).
