"Pinkman: An Potóir = The potter. The name is written Pottoyre in a Royal Commission Report of 1821-1825. It may be that the place derived its name from a potter who lived and worked there. Possibly the name has been shortened and that some such word as baile or achadh should be understood before it – Baile-an-Photóire. Compare Rath-an-Photaire, the potter’s rath. Note, Four Masters, AS 1461. The townland is on Slieve-an-Ierin and on the east of the yellow river, Ballinamore Parish. "
