"LSO: In this Parish there are two remarkable instances of vulgar peasant translations of names of Townlands, and exactly similar to Caulfield in Cavan, viz., Sheffield and Mealwood [Minkill]. … The latter is Mionn-Choill (Lt. L. decided that the alteration, tho’ correct, would be too violent) and really means Small-wood or Underwood; but because the words Min, Meal and Mionn, Small, communited are so similar, the peasantry have taken it in their stupid numbskulls to translate it Mealwood! And in this the peasantry are followed by the gentry, who know nothing of either name.
