"Pinkman: Eanach Íarla = The earl’s or chieftain’s marsh or moor. “Annaghearly, the name of a lake and a townland, 4 miles north east of Carrick-on-Shannon, the earl’s marsh.” Joyce, Place-names, Vol. II, p. 58. Íarla was borrowed into the language about the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion. The word is often met in the Annals. This townland lies east of Gowel Catholic Church. An old notice of it – about 100 years ago – mentions that it had a tuckmill, a corn-mill and a corn kiln. "
