"Pinkman: Béal-Átha-Gairt = Ford mouth of the field. “There are many places in this Parish (Kiltoghert) whose names begin with ‘Beal Atha’ but which have been incorrectly anglicized ‘Bally’. Look at Bellantra, Bellagart and Bellanaboy and give them due consideration.” (O’Donovan, Letters on Co. Leitrim). This place is near Leitrim village and a bridge now spans the small stream in the townland, at the place, from which, I believe, the townland takes its name. "
