"Pinkman: Meacan = Wild carrot land. Meacan is used to denote any tap-rooted plant, such as a carrot or a parsnip. Usually it has a qualifying term – meacan bán, a parsnip; meacan buidhe, a carrot. This place, Mackan, according to a local authority quoted by O’Donovan, is so called “from the abundance of wild carrots which it produces.” That was the origin of the name. "
