"Pinkman: Scrín = A shrine. “Skreeny in Leitrim, a mere lengthening of scrín, a shrine.” (Joyce, place-names, Vol.III). There are three townlands of this name in County Leitrim… Scrín, was an ornamental casket, or box, made to contain the relics of a saint. At one time these shrines were very common in Ireland. They were made of the best; were held in the greatest reverence and kept with very great care. The churches or places where these shrines were preserved, were known by the Irish word, scrín. Compare Skreen, in Mayo, from Scrín-Adhamhnáin, Skreen in Meath, from Scrín-Cholumcille. "
