"Pinkman Gleann-Éig = Valley of death. It is not easy now to say why the place was so named. Joyce explains a place called Loughaneeg, Loch-an-Éig, in Co. Roscommon, as the lake of the decline, because children who were wasting away, were brought and bathed there as a cure "
